Well anyway the purpose of this was to propose a way to potentially get better color on displays that are capable of it. I also color corrected it for sRGB screens (slightly reduces magenta). I normalized the output according to the colorburst level, otherwise everything's just too damn bright. ![]() If you look closely you can see the subcarrier isn't fully suppressed, but I was tired of making filters. I imagine an actual NES has some filtering that no one's bothered to quantify, in addition to the TV video filters. Also the output of the PPU is quite sharp and needed some aggressive filtering. But I had to offset the colorburst generator by 3.5 clock cycles and I'm not sure why. It seems to match up with the puNES NTSC palette (that's what I'm using these days, sue me), so I guess it's okay. It's just that I had to generate a complete frame, i.e. Ignore the fact that the colors are on there twice. This is what I ended up with after a great deal of tinkering with the filters: I wasn't able to find YIQ or YUV values but I did find the voltage levels off of the nesdev wiki, so I created a mock-up of a raw PPU signal and drove it into my CRT tools. Long ago some measurements off the PPU were used to come up with video emulation for Nestopia, and the default palette would end up in most of the other emulators (maybe slightly different). I spent some time searching for the raw YIQ values of the NES video system but was unable to find thm. When taking screenshots with KEGA Fusion, instead of cropping 8 pixels on the top and the bottom, crop 16 pixels.I was playing Mother the other day when it dawned on me that the full range of the NES's video signals can be taken advantage of with modern TVs and monitors that support wide gamuts. KEGA Fusion takes screenshots of games using the interlaced video mode with 480 pixels, and Gens/GS takes screenshots with 224 or 240 pixels. There is an interlaced video mode in the SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis that doubles the vertical resolution from 224 pixels to 448 pixels (PAL games can also double the vertical resolution from 240 pixels to 480 pixels), but every emulator has its way of handling the interlaced video mode. (Gens/GS II always takes screenshots with the proper brightness) and press Shift+Backspace to take a screenshot in the Gens/GS installation directory. Gens/GS: Change Color Scale to Full in Graphics > Color Adjust., disable Show SegaCD LEDs in Options > General Options.Note that the screenshots are BMP files, which must be converted to PNG before being uploaded here.Note that KEGA Fusion always creates a 240-pixel tall image, so crop 8 pixels on the top and the bottom of the image if unused.> Extras and press Shift+F12 to take a screenshot on the KEGA Fusion installation directory. KEGA Fusion: Enable Brighten in Video, change File Format to BMP unc and Output Stage to Raw in Options > Set Config.Screenshots are most of the time 320×224, but they may also be 256×224. SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis, Mega-CD/SEGA CD, 32X ZSNES should not be used because the last line on the bottom is always cut off. Just press F12 to take a screenshot on the Snes9X installation directory in a folder called Screenshots. Snes9X: Screenshots are always taken with the proper resolution.Nestopia, on the other hand, uses accurate color emulation and should be used for screenshots of VS System games. FCEUX must NOT be used to take screenshots of VS System games, since its built-in palettes are very outdated and do not match the real colors. ![]() There is an arcade version of the NES/Famicom called the VS System, but every machine uses its own palette. Now press F12 to save a screenshot in the FCEUX installation directory in a folder called snaps. and in Drawing Area change NTSC to 0 and 239, respectively. FCEUX: Go to Config > Palette., enable Use Custom Palette, click Load Palette., go to the FCEUX installation directory, enter the palettes folder, select nestopia_yuv.pal, go to Config > Video.and press Alt+E to save a screenshot on the Nestopia installation directory in a folder called screenshots. Nestopia: Change Palette to YUV in Options > Video.Many emulators by default incorrectly display the NES as 256×224 on NTSC, but this is NOT the native resolution of the NES in NTSC!
